Sinakulo in the Philippines
Sinakulo, also known as the Passion Play in other parts of the world, is a traditional Filipino dramatization of the life, passion, and death of Jesus Christ. This event is particularly significant during the Lenten season. It's performed in public squares, houses, and streets, and involves singing (pasyon) and recitation.
The Sinakulo often takes place in many communities, especially in Bulacan, Rizal, and Pampanga provinces during Holy Week. An outdoor Sinakulo often parades a figure of Jesus carrying the Cross through the streets, emphasizing the violence and brutality of Jesus’ persecutors. It's also known by different names in various regions, such as pasyon y muerte in Rizal, Bulacan, Bataan, and Pampanga, centurion or hudyuhan in Laguna, tanggal in the Bicol region, and pamalandong in Leyte.
This tradition has been upheld by Catholic devotees in the Philippines for several decades, with the Passion play initially happening every Good Friday when Catholics were singing the Gospel. It's a significant part of Filipino culture and religious tradition. 😊
