The Hartashen Megalithic Avenue: A Forgotten Ancient Wonder of Armenia
Tucked away in the rugged terrain of Armenia, the Hartashen Megalithic Avenue stands as one of the world’s most enigmatic ancient wonders. Believed to be between 6,000 and 8,000 years old, this mysterious site features towering stone monoliths that are meticulously aligned across the landscape. Was it a ceremonial path, an ancient observatory, or something entirely different? The true purpose of Hartashen remains shrouded in mystery.

Unlike its more famous counterparts, such as Stonehenge, Hartashen has largely escaped the attention of mainstream archaeology, with its secrets still hidden beneath the soil.

The imposing stones, standing sentinel over the landscape, suggest the presence of a forgotten civilization that possessed a sophisticated understanding of both space and ritual.

Despite its age and potential significance, Hartashen remains largely unexcavated and unexplored, inviting curiosity about the ancient people who once inhabited this area.

What is a Fata Morgana?

A Fata Morgana is a complex form of superior mirage that occurs when rays of light are bent as they pass through air layers of different temperatures. This atmospheric phenomenon can make objects on the horizon, such as ships or coastlines, appear distorted, inverted, or even floating above the water. The term "Fata Morgana" originates from the Italian name for Morgan le Fay, a sorceress from Arthurian legend, and is often associated with the Strait of Messina between Italy and Sicily. Fata Morgana mirages are caused by temperature inversions, where a layer of warm air sits above a cooler layer, bending light rays downward and creating the illusion of elongated, compressed, or duplicated images. This phenomenon is most commonly observed over large bodies of water.

The Atacama Desert has more than 5,000 ancient geoglyphs—immense designs and figures drawn into the dry flats and hills—similar to Peru’s famous Nazca Lines north of here. Some of the Atacama geoglyphs are about 1,200 years old, dating to 800 CE. The most recent was made 500 years ago in the 16th century.

The largest is called the Atacama Giant—it’s a 390-foot-tall figure on a hillside that looks a bit like an Alien. Scientists think the Atacama Giant was likely an astronomical guide, as the lines that stretch off the figure’s head predict the movement of the moon and can be used to map the changing of the seasons. Or, as some believe, perhaps it really is a depiction of the alien who created it.
